I really wanted to find proof that there were barrier troops with machine guns literally aimed at the advancing troops, but couldn’t. Rather, barrier troops were MP, checking everyone who wandered back and proccessing them.
Though if you are in a world that “Enemy at the gates” movie describes, then yeah.
And then, maybe the crew bugged out and every passing Landser (or Finnish trooper, or GI if this was in Korea) put a couple of rounds in it, just for grins.
Looks like the crew stood their ground well and true to the Red Army Oath of Service.

I’m not sure if it was the Oath of Service or the guys with the blue collar tabs at the next terrain feature back.
